Hey! Do you have a go-to Birthday wish?
Season 4 of Nights and Weekends feels like it’s moving much faster than season 3. Week 2 has already come and gone and I spent most of that time getting 1 thing ready.
A rough draft of my new story that you can check it out here: Maneus Draft_0.1
After ripping through my old work and rewriting everything, I now have more than 130,000 words ready to share.
Like with Besnowed, I decided to put it up on Google Docs. I thought that was a good way to honor the tradition and make it a toy people can play with.
What’s in a Draft?
Every week we are given a task and have to submit proof of our work to Buildspace. While the wording is not always obvious for non-tech projects, the intention is clear and easily adaptable.
By design, Buildspace creates a supportive atmosphere for dreamers wanting to share an idea.
They want us to be honest and open about what we’re doing.
In a tightly wound example, the lonely artist may make a symphony in the forest, but if no one hears it does it really make a sound?
Regardless of how you answer that, Buildspace leans toward making attempts to have something heard. Erring on the side of doing anything translating into doing more than most people ever do – at least publicly.
For this second week, we were thus tasked to build and release a toy. The word may seem strange to some, but I doubt many would struggle to understand the intention.
They wanted us to show the world a version of our idea that people could play with – either in theory or in practice.
The goal sits somewhere between seeing a competent concept and showing off the ability to actually pull off what is said in a bold claim.
That was why I chose a shareable Google Doc as my toy. Something easy to access and understand, providing a tangible example of what Maneus actually is.
I then announced it to the world with a post on Twitter.
I dive into some of the backstory of where the story came from and how it evolved in the thread, so click the link if you’re curious to learn more!
Busy Birthday Wishes
There’s still a lot to do before Demo Day and I’m not entirely sure I have enough time to do it. I’ll know soon enough how that story ends!
In the meantime, I like to remember how I’ve been saying the same thing every time I blow out the candles on my cake:
I want to make my stories a true part of who I am.
And now I’m finally getting closer to making my dream of being a legitimate author a reality.
Until next time.
Cheers,
John
